If you’re thinking about moving to Tennessee, I wanted to share a little about my hometown: Crossville, TN.
I grew up in Crossville, and it’s the place I ended up coming back to after time away, so I get a lot of questions from people who are curious what makes it different from the bigger cities everyone talks about. Here’s a quick rundown:

Where Crossville Is on the Map
Crossville sits right between Knoxville and Nashville along I-40. It’s about an hour to Knoxville, which puts you an hour from Turkey Creek for a shopping trip, and about an hour and a half to Nashville, close enough to head down for a night on Broadway or catch a concert without it turning into a whole – multi-day – production.
Why People Are Moving to Crossville
A few things keep coming up when I ask people why they chose Crossville, TN:
- Cooler weather. Crossville sits up on the Cumberland Plateau, so temperatures run a little cooler here than what you’ll find in Knoxville or Nashville, especially in the summer. I find that areas like Nashville or Chattanooga tend to run 10 degrees hotter than the Cumberland Plateau.
- Lower property tax. Compared to a lot of the areas people are relocating from, property taxes here are noticeably lower, which adds up over the life of owning a home. (For instance, I recently saw a 1400 sq ft home with .62 acres in the county that only had $476.13 in property taxes for the entire year! In some states, the property taxes on a comparable home would be multiple-$1000s.)
- A market that doesn’t move as fast. Homes here don’t fly off the market the way they do in bigger cities. That gives buyers room to shop around, pull comps, and negotiate instead of feeling pressured to make a snap decision just to keep up with the market. I am writing this in September and the average days on market currently is 170.4 days. (That’s almost 6 months!)
Thinking About Making the Move?
Crossville isn’t trying to be Knoxville or Nashville, and that’s kind of the point. It’s close enough to both when you want them, but it has its own pace the rest of the time. If you’re considering a move to my hometown, Crossville, TN, I’d love to help you figure out if it’s the right fit and walk you through what buying here looks like.
